Gastroenterology
Dean
Health System’s Gastroenterology
specialists (gastroenterologists or GIs) provide consultation,
detection and treatment for diseases of the digestive system
(gastrointestinal
or GI
tract),
including the stomach, intestines, esophagus, bile
ducts, and other organs related to digestion.
Gastroenterologists are trained in Internal Medicine, and have additional training in gastroenterology. Common conditions treated by gastroenterologists include irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), acid reflux disease, celiac disease, and detection of polyps and cancer.
Gastroenterologists are trained in endoscopy (upper endoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy). Endoscopy uses very thin, flexible tubes with tiny built-in lights and video cameras to view inside the digestive tract and perform minimally invasive procedures.
You may be referred to the St. Mary's/Dean Digestive Health Center (Madison) or to a Day Surgery Center (Madison and Janesville) for an endoscopic or outpatient surgical procedure performed by a Dean specialist.
Dean's gastroenterologists work closely with primary care physicians and other specialists to provide comprehensive care for patients.
