How Government Mandates Affect your Coverage
Dependent Coverage Mandate
Beginning with January 1, 2010 renewals, the State of Wisconsin will require heath insurance plans to offer dependent coverage on the parent’s policy until the dependent turns age 27 or is married—whichever comes first. Financial support from parents is no longer required, and full-time student status is no longer required, except in certain cases of military service. If the dependent is offered coverage through an employer that is more expensive than the coverage under a parent’s plan, the dependent can remain eligible for coverage under the parent’s plan. Parents are not required to keep dependents on their plan if they choose remove them. And parents can add eligible dependents when their policy renews.
